Jane Owen was appointed Governor of the Cayman Islands on Friday, 21 April 2023. Before taking up her current post, Her Excellency spent many years as a highly experienced senior corporate leader and diplomat, most recently as HM Ambassador to the Swiss Confederation and non-resident Ambassador to Liechtenstein from 2017 to 2023.
Other career postings include Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer, UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) from 2014 to 2016; HM Ambassador to Norway (2010 to 2014); Director, Trade, Finance, Science and Climate Change, British High Commission, New Delhi, India (2006 to 2010); Director of Trade Promotion, British Embassy, Tokyo, Japan (2002 to 2006); Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy, Hanoi, Vietnam (1998 to 2001); Head of Mediterranean and Asia Section, European Union Department in the Foreign Commonwealth Office (1996 to 1998); Head of Exports to Japan Unit, Department of Trade and Industry (1993 to 1996); and Second Secretary (Commercial), British Embassy, Tokyo, Japan (1990 to 1993).
Governor Owen was educated at Ellerslie School in Malvern, and Trinity College, Cambridge (BA Hons in Russian, French and German). She was born in Bilston in the West Midlands. She married David Donnelly in 1998 who passed away in 2017. They have two children, Phoebe (aged 23) and James (aged 21).
